Unfortunately, Jazzmutant close its gate….
Due to JMs offical press release, they will sell no further Lemurs by the end of this year.
Lemurs (pronounced /ˈliːmər/ us dict: lē′·mər) are a clade of strepsirrhine primates endemic to the island of Madagascar. They are named after the lemures (ghosts or spirits) of Roman mythology due to the ghostly vocalizations, reflective eyes, and the nocturnal habits of some species. Although lemurs often are confused with ancestral primates, the anthropoid primates (monkeys, apes, and humans) did not evolve from them; instead, lemurs merely share morphological and behavioral traits with basal primates.
the namesake of the product desribes the situation quite good
- they are endemic – so only rare, and never ment to rule the planet
- have nocturnal habits…which matches some personal preferences
…. “Isolated on Madagascar with only a limited number of mammalian competitors, the lemurs did not have to compete with other evolving arboreal mammalian groups, such as squirrels. They were also spared from having to compete with monkeys, which evolved later. The intelligence, aggression, and deceptiveness of monkeys gave them an advantage over other primates in exploiting the environment.“…
- limited number of competitors

- …..squirrels.= ipad (?)
- or monkeys…
- at least: “The intelligence, aggression, and deceptiveness of monkeys gave them an advantage over other primates in exploiting the environment.”
- so let´s exploite !
I am proud and happy that I had the chance to build my interfaces on that frontline technologie.
Touchscreen is defintely on mass market now… and there are already good tools to build controls nearly like a Lemur = TouchOSC. but till now, there is a big difference in control possibilities, not only the “ethernet vs wifi connection” discussion.. at the moment TochOSC misses some functions, that I love on my Lemur.. and would not like to miss:
- controllable physics
- easy direct midi/OSC mapping
- a “range” object
- a programmable light function – independent from status “on/off” (!)
- programmable movements of objects and containers
however, TouchOSC and other will develop…they have just begun. and this is good news!
I am more interested in these “sandbox controllers” for touchscreens, where you can build your own interfac, but “out of the box”, to plug and play – already got some nice apps:
- or more as you could read here: CDM
the future has just started….
And the Lemur is now part of history… well mainley, they will exist for a few more years, cause JM quaranty that they will keep Jazzeditor and Jazzdaemon updated with latest OS till 2011…. but as you need communication with hardware – hardly depending on OS -Lemur controllers will vansih with new OS from 2012 on…
well, I always love to cuddle my lemur…so let´s wave him bye bye.
and there is another interesting behaviour of those animals:
